Bioswale Work Session - National Capital Area Women Paddlers Association (NCAWPA)
Sunday, November 9, 2025
Volunteers dove into tasks needed to wrap up the bioswale work for the year. About 15 congenial paddlers pulled invasives, replaced fencing around trees, and dug up the stubborn roots of False Indigobush. The bioswale looks great after this year's intense volunteer work.

The work of the barge movers and the invasives pullers overlapped on this ramp, but everyone was kept safe by frequent sweeping and many wheelbarrow loads.

Tasks accomplished today
Focus: Section 4
New wire fencing was placed around six trees.
Two new patches of Japanese Stilt Grass were pulled, clearing nearly to bare ground.
West end of sec 4 - a number of False
Indigobush saplings were dug up, roots & all
The very large False Indigobush up against the paddlers dock was cut back, roots chopped.
Picked up trash - 2 bags worth

Bioswale Work Session - American University and Capital Rowing Club
Sunday, October 26, 2025
Volunteers from AU crew and CRC club members gathered on Sunday morning to remove invasive species from the river shore at ACBA. About 18 people worked on tasks in this next-to-final session for 2025.

In an extraordinary effort, 2 volunteers dug
out roots of the one spot where we have
the nasty invasive, Phragmites.

Sunday, Sept 7 26, 2025
About 15 BI crew and their parents worked from 9:30-noon removing Sweet Autumn Clematis, lespedisa, and other invasive species from the bioswale. We notice a new invasive species - Ugh. Japanese Stilt Grass.

Bioswale Work Session - Wakefield HS crew & parents
Saturday, July 26, 2025
An enthusiastic group of 10 crew and 15 parents joined in this month's work session. The bioswale is in it's July fullness, with some areas hard to walk into. But the work session have been great and the area is full of tall healthy switchgrass and the trees look vibrant. Thank you for all the hard work Wakefield!!

Bioswale Work Session - DC Stokes Rowing Club
Saturday, June 21, 2025
A diligent group of 12 volunteers worked from 9-11am on various projects. The main task today was to clear behind the boathouse so that new doors can be installed on the back. Other people identified and removed False Indigo Bush. Others cleared the River Birch and Magnolia, section 1. A very productive morning! THANK YOU DC Strokes!!

A diligent group of 27 students and 2 coaches accomplished important tasks today. Jim lead a group in Sect 1 to clear out bush
honeysuckle and clear off the rocks. Mary worked with students in Sect 4 to cut down Willow in the spring, and clear around the
bioswale sign & Serviceberry trees.

AWS EARTH DAY & Bioswale Work Session
Saturday, April 26 2025
Sixty five volunteers signed up through the Anacostia Watershed Society for Earth Day at the Anacostia Community Boathouse. Plus seven volunteers from the boathouse who led the activities. The volunteers collected 49 black bags of trash, and 25 bags of recyclable bottles and cans. This data will be used to support Bottle Bills in DC and Prince Georges county. There was a little rain, but all in all a successful and fun day!

Saturday, April 15, 2025
A beautiful day by the river. 18 students and 3 teachers chose to spend the day at the boathouse working in the bioswale. Great students and hard workers!

Bioswale Work Session - Gonzaga Day of Service
Saturday, March 15, 2025
A Day of Service for Gonzaga and Georgetown Visitation crews. About 70 crew members, coaches and parents spent the day tackling the pernicious False Indigobush, moving driftwood, and pulling massive vines from River birch trees. Their work will be impactful on all future clean ups this year! THANK YOU GONZAGA & Visitation!
